Jacqui Burfoot’s dad has spoken out as to why none of Jacqui’s family went to her wedding or appeared on Married at First Sight (MAFS) at all during her stint on the show, saying Jacqui’s reason for going on the show was “probably opportunity”.
In an op-ed written for the NZ Herald, Jacqui’s dad Doog Burfoot slammed Jacqui’s edit, calling out the show for making her “unrecognisable”.
“The Jacqui you see on MAFS is a highly fictional and twisted avatar of the real person. She is unrecognisable to us and a product of gross editing that uses “frankenbiting” — splicing different answers to different questions, showing the bad 1% to create, in Jacqui’s case, the ‘crazy’ narrative,” he wrote.
Jacqui’s dad reveals why her family didn’t attend her MAFS wedding
Jacqui’s family didn’t appear on the show at any point, with her father saying they weren’t “overly happy” with her decision to appear on MAFS.
“Jacqui did talk to her mum and me about going on the show. We weren’t overly happy, but we knew she would die wondering if she didn’t,” he wrote. “Her reason, we think, was probably for opportunity… to go through the door to see what’s there: love, fame, fortune, or just the adventure of the unknown and the discovery of new doors to open.”

He even cracked a joke about one of Jacqui’s iconic lines on the show, writing, “Hmm… come to think of it, I recall her saying on the show that Ryan was more of a ‘chair’ than a door.”
He said Jacqui asked them to attend her wedding to Ryan Donnelly, but her parents opted out.
“We were asked by Jacqui to attend the wedding but we said that we would prefer to go to her real wedding. We think this is one of the reasons she chose a blue wedding dress… to save the white one for the real thing.”

He also wrote that the family wouldn’t support Jacqui doing another reality TV stint.
“After her experiences with MAFS, we would not support her going on another reality TV show. The power to destroy will always remain with the producers.”
Jacqui’s dad calls her and Clint a ‘formidable’ team
Jacqui’s new fiancé Clint Rice has been given the tick of approval by the family, with Jacqui’s dad saying they are thrilled by the engagement news.
“Jacqui and Clint came to Queenstown to stay with us for a week after filming had finished but before the show aired. We love Clint. He is a rock and dotes on Jacqui. He is intelligent, easygoing and fun to be around,” he wrote. “The two are well-suited and form a formidable team that will likely grow together along whatever path they follow.
“As of Sunday night, things just got real for Jacqui and Clint. Clint proposed to Jacqui at the MAFS reunion party in Sydney. And no surprise to us, she said yes. We are thrilled.”
