In some big news for Squid Game fans: not only are we getting closer to the release date for Season 2 (and Season 3!), but the official trailer has been released.
Yep, ICYMI, Netflix’s Squid Game Season 2 will drop this year, and Season 3 next year — meaning the gap between the two instalments is small.
The bad news? Season 3 will be the final instalment of the series. Boo!
Here’s everything we know about Season 2… and 3.
When will Squid Game Season 2 be released?
Season 2 of Squid Game premieres on Netflix on December 26, 2024. Netflix shows are typically released at midnight Pacific Time, which is 6pm AEST — so you can expect Squid Game Season 2 to pop up on the platform then.
While we know that the final season (Season 3) will be released in 2025, there’s no specific date just yet.
How to watch Season 2
The series is exclusive to Netflix and will be available to stream on the platform. Fingers crossed the whole season drops on the release date!
Is there a Squid Game Season 2 trailer?
There sure is, and it’s action-packed. The latest Squid Game trailer shows Seong Gi-hun (Player 456) asking to be put back into the game with the hope of creating change and ending the whole thing. However, the trailer highlights a long list of problems that stand in his way — including other players.
What is Squid Game Season 2 about?
The deadly games that made up Season 1 will be back for Season 2. It picks up three years after Player 456 won his games and took home around $38 million in prize money.
He’s determined to put a stop to the Games and is using his new fortune to fund his mission.
His first step is to find the man in a sharp suit playing Ddakji in the subway. However, once he begins his pursuit, he realises the only way to possibly stop the games is to reenter them.
How many episodes are in Squid Game Season 2?
Season 2 will only have seven episodes, which is a drop from the ten episodes released for Season 1.
The show’s creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk, explained his reasoning behind the choice.
“I wrote seasons two and three at the same time, and we were in production for both simultaneously, and currently we are in the post-production process for Season 3,” he told Deadline.
“When I was writing the script for the two seasons, I felt like there was a big turning point or an inflection point, and that was the end of episode seven, so I thought that it would do it justice to have a separate season after that.
“That’s why I had the first seven episodes as Season 2 and then the rest of Season 3.”
Who is in the Squid Game Season 2 cast?
Of course, (spoiler alert!) a huge chunk of characters died in Season 1, so some fan faves like Kang Sae-byeok (Player 067) and Ali Abdul (Player 199) won’t be returning. RIP.
However, Player 456 (Lee Jung-jae), Frontman (Lee Byung-hun), Hwang Jun-ho (Wi Ha-jun), and the Sales Man (Gong Yoo) are all back for Season 2.
They’ll be joined by newcomers including Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Gyu-young, Lee Jin-uk, Park Sung-hoon, Yang Dong-geun, Kang Ae-sim, Lee David, Choi Seung-hyun, Roh Jae-won, Jo Yu-ri and Won Ji-an.
Boxing Day can’t come soon enough!
Squid Game Season 2 will air on Netflix on December 26, 2024.
