The Block's Shaynna Blaze explains her surprising new music career

The Block judge Shaynna Blaze has explained why she’s decided to do a career pivot and pursue music.

Back in April, the home-renovating queen made the announcement that she’s releasing her first single, Warrior, on May 3.

“Here we go… so excited to release my first single ‘Warrior’ on May 3. This track means so much to me. I can’t wait to share it with you,” she wrote on Instagram at the time.

Now, Shaynna has told the Today show’s Richard Wilkins and Sylvia Jeffreys that she’s always wanted to try her hand at a musical career.

“There are lots of reasons why music was on the back burner for me,” she explained. “Initially, it was my family. I just wasn’t making enough money to support them,’ she said.

“It was about getting other avenues of income…you just don’t make a lot of money.”

“On top of that, my kids were getting older and I used to sing when they were young. I’d put them to bed, go to sing and then come back, and my parents would look after them. But it got to the stage where my daughter was 14 or 15, she was going out to parties. And I was like “I think I need to be around,” she said.

Shaynna told the hosts that her love for music runs so deep that she actually had to stop listening to it because it reminded her of her dream of getting into singing.

“I missed it. There was something that really hurt listening to music so I actually stopped listening to music for a while. The songs that I loved I didn’t play anymore. I suppressed it only because I missed it so much,'” she said.

Shaynna has sung on reality TV multiple times

While Shaynna’s new career path may come as a shock to some, she’s actually sung on reality TV multiple times in the past.

Back in 2023, Shaynna competed on Celebrity Apprentice Australia and won the series. During the show’s star-studded charity auction dinner, Shaynna took to the stage and belted out a song.

“I’m about to perform a song called Lullaby Mother to Son,” she told the audience during the episode.

In 2023, Shaynna was unmasked as the Blue Bottle on The Masked Singer Australia.

During her time on the show she performed I Say a Little Prayer by Dionne Warwick and Call Me by Blondie.

She sang the latter during a Sing-Off against Tiny, who was later uncovered to be Pete Murray. Shaynna was selected by the panel to have her identity uncovered.

“[Singing] was something I squashed for a long time, but now it’s time to bring the vocal cords back out again I think,” she told the judges at the time.
