What would you get if you jumbled up Gossip Girl and The Royals, and then popped it into a movie format? Well, probably something that looks a whole lot like the upcoming flick called Red White and Royal Blue.
The Prime Video comedy-romance follows the Prince of England and the son of the President of the United States as their PR-ordered friendship suddenly blossoms into a romantic relationship. The two men have to navigate their newfound love all while being in the public eye and maintaining their official roles.
The feature film is based on the novel of the same name by Casey McQuiston and is directed by Matthew Lopez. The Inheritance playwriter told EW he started gunning for the role after reading the New York Times best seller.
“I first read the book in early 2020 and I decided I wanted to make the movie by page 100,” he told the publication.
“I fell madly in love with the characters and I wanted to bring them to life on the screen. I also was excited at the prospect of filming scenes set in the world of the presidency and the British Royal Family. I shamelessly harassed [producers] Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schecter into backing me with the studio to direct it. The idea that someone else might make this movie filled me with unbearable jealousy.”
Who’s in Red, White and Royal Blue?
Taylor Zakhar Perez will play Alex Claremont-Diaz, the son of the President of the United States and Nicholas Galitzine will be Prince Henry of England.
Uma Thurman has been cast as Alex’s mother, who is the newly elected United States President Ellen Claremont. Other castmembers include Rachel Hilson, Clifton Collins Jr., Stephen Fry, Sarah Shahi, Ellie Bamber, Aneesh Sheth, Polo Morin, Ahmed Elhaj, Sharon D.
