Passengers is the new sci-fi film that had everyone on the edge of their seats when they discovered that Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence were the stars. However, critics and viewers who got a chance to see the film before its release date have been left with a sour taste in their mouth after discovering a twist.

Although the trailer paints a picture of Passengers being this sci-fi romance about Jim Preston (Pratt) and Aurora Jones (Lawrence) realising that they’ve woken up 90 years too early on a spaceship destined for a new planet, it leaves one major detail out.

Preston wakes up first. He’s the one who realises that he has woken up by himself too early. After battling with this decision that he might die alone for a few months, he picks Jones out and goes through her personal information (like the fact she’s a journalist from New York City), decides that she’s the companion for him and wakes her up from hibernation too.

Preston spends months obsessing over this woman, and once the decision is made to wake her up, that’s it. It’s done. He’s decided that they’re both going to die together on board this spaceship without her even being aware of it.

The romance that is portrayed on screen automatically becomes a whole lot creepier when you take into account that Jones has NO idea what Preston has done and that she’s falling in love with the man who kidnapped her and sentenced her to the same fate as him.

Many reviewers are not happy, with The Guardian giving this review:

‘Passengers [is so intent] on forging cosmic levels of romance that it tidies up the unpleasantness and sweeps it under the carpet as quickly as possible.’

So, there you have it folks. Pratt’s character no longer seems as genuine when you know the backstory, but it’s all good because you know, they fall in love in the end. Happy viewing!
