Nick Kyrgios sparks retirement rumours following Australian Open 2025 singles defeat

The 2025 Australian Open has kicked off, giving tennis fans two weeks of top-tier tennis action at Melbourne Park. But for Australian star Nick Kyrgios‘ return to the AO, the tournament ended almost as soon as it began.

Kyrgios faced off against Scotland’s Jacob Fearnley in the first round of the AO 2025 draw, only to fall in straight sets: 7-6 (7-3), 6-3, 7-6 (7-2).

The loss has left fans wondering if this might be the final singles match the tennis icon plays at his home Grand Slam.

Nick Kyrgios hints at retirement following tough loss at Australian Open

After the match, Kyrgios left everyone guessing about his future during a candid press conference.

“Realistically, I can’t see myself playing singles again here,” the 29-year-old confessed, fuelling speculation about a potential early retirement.

Nick struggled with an abdominal strain during the match, limiting his performance.

Despite the physical challenges, he pushed through to deliver a show for the packed John Cain Arena.

“I knew tonight was going to be tough,” Nick admitted.

“But just seeing the fans line up for four, five hours… it was hard to throw the towel in.”

Reflecting on the toll injuries have taken, he added: “I’m here because I feel like I deserve to be here, but it’s hard when you’re competing for the biggest tournaments in the world and struggling to win sets physically. It’s pretty tough.”

The doubles dream lives on for Nick

While his singles campaign is over, Nick isn’t done with the Australian Open 2025 just yet. He confirmed that he will team up with his good mate Thanasi Kokkinakis for the doubles competition.

When asked if he was still fit for doubles, Nick responded with a confident, “Yeah, yeah, yeah.”

He added, “Me and Thanasi… we owe it to each other to go out there and play. Obviously, I know that he’s a physical wreck most of the time, but he somehow pushes through. Props to him for getting through his match today.”

The singles result may sting, but doubles offers Nick a swing at redemption, and a chance to keep his Aussie fans cheering. Best of luck to them!
