Matt Agnew has revealed that he applied and was approached for The Bachelorette for two separate seasons before landing The Bachelor leading role in 2019.
Coming onto Abbie Chatfield‘s It’s A Lot podcast, the astrophysicist revealed that he actually didn’t even know he was applying to be The Bachelor when he was going through that process.
For the uninitiated, Abbie was a contestant on Matt’s season of The Bachelor. However, he broke up with her at the final rose ceremony where he instead chose to be with Chelsie McLeod.
Matt Agnew applied for The Bachelorette
“It was like two or three years earlier [I applied],” Matt explained to Abbie, saying he went onto the group interview stage before ultimately having to drop out.
The first time he pulled out because he started dating someone, and the second year they called him back, Matt wasn’t in the country to be able to film.
When it came to 2019, Matt said he “copied and pasted” all his answers from the previous years he’d submitted an application.
Matt alluded to 2016 and 2017 being the years he went through The Bachelorette application process.
For context, The Bachelorette in 2016 was Georgia Love and in 2017 it was Sophie Monk.
“The video application was several years old, I was the wrong age in it and I threw it in not thinking much about it,” he explained.
As he progressed throughout the audition process, a producer asked Matt how he’d deal with dating several women at once.
“That was when the penny dropped. I’m not actually interviewing for the show I thought I applied to,” he laughed.
Can you imagine him as a contestant on The Bachelorette?
Matt confirmed the viral “I’m a Gemini” clip with Abbie Chatfield was edited.
As Matt and Abbie were reflecting on their Bachelor journey together, the pair recalled the infamous moment where they meet for the first time.
In the clip we all saw, Matt tells Abbie he’s an astrophysicist to which she replies “I’m a Gemini”.
However, Abbie has previously clarified that’s not exactly how the exchange went down.
“Can we just confirm now that that was edited?” Abbie prompted Matt.
“100%,” he responded. Matt went on to detail that he’s been clarifying that edit since the very first interviews he had about the show.
“I was coming out and clarifying that this was a joke, you were winding me up, it landed perfectly and we had a good laugh about it.”
The pair laughed that Abbie still gets tagged in the clip once a week and Matt at least once a month.
“I’m on dating apps and the amount [of times] the opening line is “I get ‘Oh by the way, I’m a Leo’,” Matt laughed.
Abbie went on to confirm that Abbie actually asked Matt his star sign and then in response, told her his.
“That’s how it went down,” Matt validated, noting that the reaction shot they used was also unrelated to their exchange.
“It continues to fucking haunt me,” Abbie said.
Interesting!
So you’re telling us there’s a world in which Abbie and Matt never crossed paths? And Matt is somewhere to be found on the dating apps?
I’ll take the latter.
The Bachelor is available to stream on 10Play. You can watch Matt Agnew’s season here.
