Ben and Ellie on MAFS

“For me, that was really challenging”: MAFS’ Ben and Ellie pinpoint the biggest reason they didn’t work out

The marriage between Ben Walters and Ellie Dix has been doomed for weeks, and the couple finally left the experiment during Sunday night’s MAFS Commitment Ceremony.

While it was blindingly obvious that the pair were having some serious issues, they’ve pinpointed the main reason that they didn’t work out.

Ben and Ellie put their breakup down to a lack of healthy communication.

“For me, it was a lack of communication. Co-creating a journey together of two couples requires good and open communication and it felt like it was just one-sided. For me, that was really challenging,” Ben told Nine Entertainment.

“We did have some amazing times together and I don’t want to discount that… but Ben and I have different communication styles,” Ellie added.

Ellie says Ben was “trying to control the narrative”

During their time on the show, Ellie repeatedly questioned whether Ben had joined MAFS intending to get famous. And, Ellie doubled down on her claims.

“Ben was putting on this front in front of the cameras, so it was really hard to be myself with Ben. I was always worried about what I was saying and then he was always trying to control the narrative,” she said. “So, I wrote leave in week four and then Ben wrote stay, which was a little bit awkward.”

As per the rules of the experiment, the couple remained on the show for one more week to see if they could work on their differences. However, Ben didn’t exactly make the most of his remaining time with Ellie.

“Ben literally ran away from Skye Suites, and we actually only spent 24 hours together in that week,” she said.”

“One of [those hours] was a really big argument. It was probably my loneliest week on Married At First Sight, and I was just ready to go home.”

That argument happened when Ben read out a list to Ellie of things that he didn’t like about her.

“He didn’t like that I applied makeup, because he’s used to dating girls that don’t wear a lot. He didn’t like the fact that I was 32 and he’s 39, he reckons there’s a generation gap.

“He didn’t like the fact that I was from the Gold Coast,” she continued. “He didn’t like that I was sensitive or emotional.”

Watch Married at First Sight Sundays at 7.00pm and Monday – Thursday at 7.30pm on Nine and 9Now.
