Lucy Liu is one of those brilliant actresses that often has their work overlooked. She’s phenomenal as Dr. Joan Watson in Elementary, a modern re-imagining of Sherlock Holmes. But what you may not know is that Liu also directed four episodes over the duration of the show.

Liu is bringing out her directing skills once again, with the announcement that she will direct the first episode of Luke Cage season two.

“What a thrill to collaborate with Marvel and Netflix, two industry titans, who paint our world with inspiring stories and beguiling characters. It is such an honor to work with such a passionate and fearless team,” she said in a press release.

Jeph Loeb, executive producer for several Marvel television shows, reiterated Liu’s skills.

“When you’re dealing with a bulletproof man, it helps if you have a bulletproof Director. Lucy brings a keen eye, a superb sense of story, and an obvious love of actors.  She is rocking Luke Cage 2.”

A study published earlier this year highlighted that female directors are on the decline in Hollywood. Last year only 7% of the top 250 films were directed by women. This is a 2% decrease from 2015.

Additionally 35% of films employed absolutely no women in behind-the-scenes roles. This means that there were no women in the roles of writer, producer, executive producer, editor or cinematographer.

Hollywood has a problem with diversity. It’s no secret. People of colour and women are often overlooked. Actors with disabilities rarely get the chance to play the parts of characters with disability.

So it’s incredible that Netflix is further committing to diversity by having an Asian-American woman direct a show primarily featuring an African-American cast.

Not only that, but having Lucy Liu direct the first episode is massive. The first episode of a series is what sets the show up for the rest of the season. It’s the metaphorical rolling ball.

We can’t wait to see how this episode turns out.
