“I can overcome obstacles and keep pushing forward”: Lochy on his time in the Masterchef kitchen

Last night, fan favourite Lachlan “Lochy” Whittle‘s time in the MasterChef kitchen came to a devastating end after he lost the time auction elimination challenge to fellow contestant (and bestie), Harry Butterfield.

“I’m just really proud of the food that I was able to put up,” Whittle reflects, speaking with Chattr.

“To not have the apparatus of what I’m so used to and what I’m actually really good at, to be able to get as deep in the competition as I did. I am extremely proud of that moment.”

Whittle describes the solace he finds in cooking and the release it gives him; something he looks forward to after work, even on the “bad days.”

“[You] just put on an album and cook something delicious and just groove to some music, and everything’s going to be all right again,” he says.

Whittle’s story has touched the hearts of many a MasterChef viewer after the heartbreaking reveal that his mother, Jan, passed away from Huntington’s Disease just days before filming.

The news came out during the Mum Cook challenge episode, along with another poignant revelation: that Whittle has since discovered he has inherited the degenerative brain condition.

Despite not having a conventional upbringing, he recalls, one where disease was an uncannily familiar character, but “always a difficult thing,” Whittle thanks his mum for giving him the power in that cook “to be able to push through, and realise that no matter what there is, I can overcome obstacles and keep pushing forward.”

He remembers that challenging day on the Masterchef floor, “the crew and the other contestants and even the judges knew what I was going through, and the support that I had on that day was phenomenal.”

Thinking about some of his favourite moments from the show, Whittle is grateful for the close friendship he struck up with kitchen mate, Harry Butterfield.

“It means the world to be able to be able to come into the competition and be able to click with somebody like Harry from day one,” he says.

“To have that kind of support system, that we would do so much together on our mornings to help get into the zone. Going into the kitchen and cooking every day, and then being able to come back and debrief with each other, cook for each other, and just talk about food and support each other’s ideas… it just made it so, so great.”

The ultimate Masterchef ‘bromance’ – can we please make ‘Hochy’ a thing?

He also fondly calls to mind “a really cool moment” that happened with esteemed Vietnamese-Australian chef and restaurateur, Luke Nguyen. It was particularly significant to him, given it was Nguyen who first made Whittle “fall in love” with Vietnamese cuisine.

“I actually travelled to Vietnam because of falling in love with him and his show and how he talks about food,” says Whitall.

“In my first cook in that elimination, I tried to really ‘MasterChef’ something on a traditional Vietnamese dish, and just didn’t pull it off.”

Despite the dish, short rib Bo La Lot, being what he estimates to be around 15 minutes away from what he envisioned, Whittle describes “the little message that Luke wrote to me in my Luke Nguyen Vietnam cookbook, which was absolutely beautiful, that made me feel so good about where my head was at.”

Lochy in the kitchen with Luke Nguyen – Instagram @lochycooks

“Don’t be surprised if you see that coming up in one of my restaurants, because I thought that was a fabulous idea,” wrote Nguyen.

The chef also gave a cheeky “Ps.” that he would be nabbing the wing bean and green mango pickle recipe Whittle used in his subsequent ghee-seared kingfish cook.

“I pride myself on Vietnamese cooking, and I tried to do a lot in that cook to really impress him. I may have bitten off more than I could chew, especially for a dish I hadn’t tested or done before,” Whittle admits.

“But to have that message after not being eliminated come down right in front of me really made me feel special about that.”

This is how much Harry Jowsey can make on a single Instagram Post

If Harry Jowsey‘s actions on the latest season of Netflix’s Perfect Match didn’t shock you then the serious coin he can make on Instagram sure will.

The 27-year-old Australian reality TV star — who shot to fame on Netflix’s Too Hot Too Handle debut season in 2020 — has an impressive 4.4 million followers on Instagram alone.

That’s a lot of potential influence and reach, something that is reflected in his estimated earnings on the platform.

As reported by PEDESTRIAN.TV, talent agency Hunter Talent has shared that Jowsey could charge just over $20,000 per post on the platform. Meanwhile, all a selfie costs me is my dignity.

harry jowsey instagram
Hear me out but I reckon I could also make $20K a post if I looked like this. And went on reality TV. Four times. (Image: @harryjowsey.)

In addition to his Instagram followers, Jowsey also has a podcast and YouTube channel to further attract brands into working with him.

Jowsey placed 28 in MediaWeek’s Social Media Influence 100 list in 2023.

He is also consistently re-entering the spotlight, following his reality TV debut in the midst of a global lockdown with stints on Dancing With The Stars, The Amazing Race Australia: Celebrity Edition and most recently the second season of Perfect Match.

Considering the cheeky possum knows how to cause a stir on screen, it’s safe to assume that each stint brings some increased engagement to Jowsey’s platforms.

In the latest season of Perfect Match, Jowsey was caught lying to his match on the show about kissing another contestant.

In the past, he was televised proposing to Francesca Farago following their rollercoaster romance on Too Hot To Handle.

The bloke does some questionable shit but boy does he know how to make good television. And with an estimated $20,000 price tag, I’m assuming he can do the same thing for Instagram ads.

The real reason McSteamy left Grey’s Anatomy won’t help you sleep at night

There are a lot of things I’m still forgiving Grey’s Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes for (like that musical episode — why?) but the departure of Mark Sloan (Eric Dane) from the Seattle Grace roster is pretty high on that list.

Today Dane — the man who played McStreamy before he rudely McLeft us — has helped us inch closer to closure by clarifying why he was savagely booted from the wildly successful television drama.

Not mad, just disappointed. (Image: Grey’s Anatomy.)

(Side note: I’m going to assume if you’re here you know what happened to Dane’s character in Grey’s Anatomy Season 9 but, on the off chance you don’t, I should let you know that this article will include spoilers.)

In a new podcast episode of Dax Shepard‘s Armchair Expert, Dane opened up about his struggles with drugs and alcohol, however, clarified that it wasn’t the reason he left Grey’s Anatomy.

In fact, he basically says he didn’t leave at all — at least not on his own accord.

“I didn’t leave so much as I think I was let go,” Dane explained.

“I was struggling. They didn’t let me go because of that, although it definitely didn’t help”.

The 51-year-old went on to say that he was let go after his six-year stint on the medical drama due to his pay-check.

“I was starting to become – as most of these actors who have spent significant time on the show – you start to become very expensive for the network,” Dane told Shepard.

“And the network knows that the show is going to do what it’s going to do irrespective of who they keep on it – as long as they have their [Meredith] Grey they were fine.”

To refresh your memory, Dane was killed off following a fatal plane accident.

It was extra hard pill to swallow considering we had lost Lexie Grey (Chyler Leigh) — another main character and McSteamy’s longtime love interest — just a few episodes prior.

It’s still one of the most talked about storylines of the show’s 20-season strong run on air.

The deaths of the pair were so impactful that Seattle Grace Mercy West Hospital was renamed the Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital in tribute.

Dane joined Grey’s Anatomy in Season Two which aired back in 2006.

“I wasn’t the same guy they had hired. So I had understood when I was let go,” Dane explained on the podcast.

“And Shonda was really great,” Dane clarified of the mastermind behind the show.

“She protected us fiercely. She protected us publicly. She protected us privately…,” he continued.

“But I was probably fired. It wasn’t ceremoniously like, ‘You’re fired,’ it was just like, ‘You’re not coming back.’”

They say reasons can provide understanding and closure, but I’m not sure these ones are going to help me sleep any better at night. Especially when my dreams involve an alternate universe where Mark and Lexie have several babies.

But at least Dane can get decent shut-eye knowing that the show peaked while he was on it?

“The life of the party”: MAFS NZ groom Andrew Jury has died aged 33

Married At First Sight (MAFS) NZ groom Andrew Jury has died at age 33.

Former MAFS stars Brett and Angel Renall and Benjamin Blackwell shared the news of Andrew’s death to Instagram, as reported by NZ Herald.

“It’s with the heaviest hearts we’ve come together to acknowledge the passing of Andrew Jury,” the statement read.

“We had the absolute pleasure of filming and participating in a show which leaves us intricately linked for a lifetime.”

Andrew’s time on MAFS NZ

Andrew appeared in MAFS NZ Season 1 back in 2017 when he was aged 26. He was matched with bride Vicky Gleeson-Stokes but the pair were not able to make the relationship work beyond the reality TV show.

A year after his time on MAFS, Andrew publicly questioned the show’s ethics, saying he and his match, Vicky, were complete opposites.

Andrew also made accusations about the filming conditions while on the show, as reported by NZ Herald.

Warner Bros Discovery — the company that brings MAFS NZ to screens — has said that they take their duty of care “extremely seriously”.

“Warner Bros Discovery (WBD) expresses our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Andrew Jury,” a WBD spokesperson told NZ Herald.

“WBD takes duty of care extremely seriously and has protocols in place regarding the wellbeing of cast and crew.

“All MAFS NZ contributors have access to mental health professionals throughout the process, including pre-screening, during production and after broadcast.”

Tributes flow from MAFS cast-mates

Andrew was described by his fellow MAFS cast-mates as “the life of the party”.

“Everyone from our series is in shock,” fellow MAFS NZ star Haydn Daniels said, as reported by The Sun.

“Extreme amounts of abuse:” MAFS’ Olivia Frazer wants a “reality TV reform”

Married At First Sight’s Olivia Frazer has spoken out against reality TV, claiming that she believes there should be a reform.

The former school teacher appeared on MAFS in 2022, and was partnered with Jackson Lonie. While she was on the show she was involved in a long-running feud with Domenica Calarco.

Olivia was largely considered a villain in her season, and while she gained a huge amount of social media followers, she experienced a lot of backlash on the platform too.

Following Married At First Sight’s Logie nomination for Best Structured Reality Program, Olivia took to her stories to express her opinion on Australian reality TV.

“I vote for reality TV reform in Australia. I vote for it to be regulated, fair portrayals,” she wrote.

“I vote for participants’ right of reply while airing — no mandatory Non-disclosure agreements (NDAs).

“I vote for transparency. No producers coming forward saying, ‘Reality TV is reality’. No, admit it’s just entertainment, extremely edited and not accurate.

“I vote for no more reality TV participants (or their friends or family) coming off of any reality show — especially MAFS — losing their jobs, losing their reputation [and] being subjected to extreme amounts of abuse.”

It’s not the first time Olivia has called out MAFS

After MAFS finished airing, Olivia went on to have a very lucrative career as an OnlyFans creator, revealing that she made half a million dollars in four months on the platform.

However, despite the financial leg up the show has given her, it’s not the first time that Olivia’s called out MAFS.

Back in August 2023, she told her Instagram followers that she believes her edit was what ended her relationship with Jackson.

“I really think if the show never aired or if it aired accurately, we’d probably still be together,” she said, in an Instagram Q&A at the time. “But alas, it did, and it really put too much pressure on our relationship, as strong as it was.”

“Not skinny and pretty”: MasterChef Australia’s Sav reveals her battle with body dysmorphia

MasterChef Australia’s Savindri ‘Sav’ Perera has shared her battle with body dysmorphia and revealed that it almost stopped her from competing on the popular reality TV show.

Sav shared a vulnerable post on Instagram and said that she was grieving her mother’s death at the time of auditions, which further led her to question her decision to go on MasterChef.

“One of the hardest battles I had to overcome before competing was severe body dysmorphia,” Sav penned on social media.

“The amount of absolute hatred I have for myself after a lifetime of being made to feel ugly for being fat was immense. Yet every morning I put my makeup on & show up, because my desire to compete is bigger than my hatred for my appearance. A big part of me wasn’t ready to go on MC because I was still grieving.”

But there was also a part of me that was scared because I’m not skinny and pretty like TV personalities usually are.”

Sav on MasterChef. Ten.

Sav said that she struggled to watch herself on MasterChef

Sav revealed that she’s been in therapy for her body dysmorphia, but still struggles to come to terms with it.

“It is sometimes really really hard for me to watch myself purely because of the intense fatphobia I have towards myself,” she explained.

“The hatred I have towards my body at times is awful. Years of therapy later & it’s better but it’s not easy. That self loathing manifested in a way that led to me convincing myself that I don’t deserve to take up space in this world. Sometimes I see comments online that often talk about how I don’t smile, how my voice is awful, how my smile is awful.. and whilst I don’t engage with these things, I still see it & while I can ignore it on most days, after a while I wonder if it’s actually true when I know it isn’t.”

Sav shared her story to help others

The MasterChef contestant said that she decided to share her story in the hope that it would help others who are going through something similar.

“I want to talk about this openly because my experience is not unique. There are many people, women, men, just people, who feel like they cannot take up space because they don’t fit society’s demands of them. I hope you know, you should do what you wanna do anyway. I hope it doesn’t stop you from going where you want to go.”

Everything you need to know about MasterChef Australia 2024’s Mimi Wong

Mimi Wong is the vivacious, energetic and magnetic MasterChef Australia 2024 contestant who started off the competition as somewhat of a dark horse, but is now thriving in challenge after challenge.

Although Mimi wasn’t able to secure immunity during the show’s visit to her home city of Hong Kong, she’s undoubtedly a talented cooked, and she’s looking to lean on some of those talents to get her to the final.

Here’s everything we know about MasterChef Australia 2024’s Mimi.

Mimi on MasterChef. Ten.

Where is Mimi from?

She was born in Hong Kong but moved to Sydney when she was just one year old. At age 11, Mimi returned to Hong Kong for seven years, following her parent’s divorce.

During that time the MasterChef contestant and her brother lived in Hong Kong public housing in a small apartment with their grandma, who instilled in them the philosophies of being a nurturer, cook and caretaker. Mimi moved back to Sydney in 2016 for university.

Mimi told South China Morning Post that she still instils the Chinese traditions she learnt during her time in Hong Kong.

“It’s me and my brother in Australia, and everyone else is back in Hong Kong, so there had to be someone to take on that matriarch role of enforcing tradition on somebody else, like: ‘I don’t care what you’re doing, you just have to come to my house’. We have to eat nian gao [rice cake] on Chinese New Year, we have to make soup on this day,” she said.

“My brother wasn’t going to do it because he’s lazy,” she says with a chuckle. “So I was like, ‘I’m going to call mum or ah por and figure out how to do it’, so that there’s still reason and purpose, and something to keep the culture and family alive between my brother and I.”

Mimi on MasterChef. Ten.

What is Mimi’s job?

Mimi works as a high school English teacher.

How did Mimi end up on MasterChef Australia?

According to her interview with South China Morning Post, Mimi was scouted after a casting producer spotted her delectable looking food on Instagram.

Although Mimi filled out the application form, she didn’t save it and consequently lost it. On the last day of applications, her boss sent her home early and she submitted hers just 45 minutes before the deadline.

“I still think back to that time, and how surreal it all felt,” says Wong. “The students were so supportive, my colleagues were super excited. It gives me goosebumps.”

“Hit the ground running”: The MasterChef judges list their favourite Hong Kong restaurants

Poh Ling Yeow, Andy AllenJean-Christophe Novelli and Sofia Levin might have been in Hong Kong to judge the MasterChef Australia contestants, but they, unsurprisingly, managed to find some spare time to check out the city’s best restaurants.

From street fare to Michelin restaurants, the food connoisseurs practically conducted a food tour of Hong Kong’s most delicious eateries, which double as a where-to-eat guide for anyone heading to that side of the world.

Find out where each of the MasterChef judges counting among their favourites in the bustling Asian city.

Sofia Levin

“We had limited time between filming to eat, but man, did we make a go of it! We hit the ground running, ditching our bags at our hotel as soon as we landed and made a beeline for Kam’s Roast Goose,” Sofia told Broadsheet.

“I’m a huge fan of discovering places rather than following recommendations when I travel, and Hong Kong is incredibly accessible in this regard. There seem to be very few bad choices to be had. Moreover, when food is cheap, your palate is willing to be more adventurous and forgiving,” the MasterChef contestant turned judge told the publication.

Jean-Christophe Novelli

“The food scene in Hong Kong is explosive, super interesting, and fascinating. The first place I visited in the middle of nowhere (just by luck) was the spacious Lei Garden Restaurant where I sat beside a massive seafood freshwater tank with live seafood,” the French chef told the publication.

“Wing Fat – The moment we got there we saw a huge line and loads of people sitting on plastic chairs out the front – it was absolute mayhem. We waited in the line for about 15 minutes before we got a table and ordered three Tsingtao longnecks stat,” he told Broadsheet.

“We ate steamed pippies in black pepper sauce, claypot-braised eggplant, and a chilli crab. It was full local style, hustle bustle, and our waiter was pumped with energy. They were turning over tables a million miles an hour. Good vibes, epic food, a must-do when you go.”

“Oh my god”: Sunrise host Nat Barr reveals shocking cancer diagnosis

Sunrise host Nat Barr has shocked viewers by sharing her recent skin cancer diagnosis.

Fortunately, it was caught earlier and the TV presenter caught the condition “really early”, and is able to treat it.

“I had a pimple on my nose that wouldn’t go away, plus I reckon it had been a couple of years since I had a skin check, so I went the dermatologist,” Nat said on Sunrise.

“He said it was skin cancer — this tiny little dot on my nose. The good thing is I got it really early, and there’s not much treatment,” she added.

“After a biopsy was taken, it did confirm that I had a small skin cancer. The good news, it could be treated non-surgically.”

Nat shared her story in the hope it would encourage viewers to get their skin checked regularly

Nat told her co-host Matt Shirvington that she hoped her story would work as a reminder for viewers to be diligent with their skin checks.

“You sort of go ‘Oh my god’. So many Aussies, millions, and millions of us have skin cancer, but it does make you think,” she said.

How Nat was diagnosed

Nat explained to Matt that she was diagnosed with skin cancer through AI technology. She said that the machine was able to pick up the small cancerous cells.

“That was so tiny, it was just a tiny little red thing. He also takes photos of your whole body and puts it in the AI machine,” Barr said.

“So, when you go back a year later, the AI machine can detect whether there has been a change quicker and better than the human eye can.”

After the AI machine identified the cancer, Nat underwent a diagnosis She was later diagnosed with skin cancer following a biopsy.

FWAW’s Jess and Andrew have shared a bunch of wedding photos and they’re adorbs

Farmer Wants a Wife’s golden couple Jess Nathan and Andrew Guthrie have shared a bunch of gorgeous photos from their recent wedding.

The pair met on FWAW in 2017 and got hitched in March 2024. Their wedding was televised during the 2024 finale.

For the past few months, followers have been begging the pair to share pics from the wedding, and that wish has now been fulfilled, as Jess and Andrew have dropped 18 photos from their nuptials.

Jess’s wedding dress

There’s no debating that Jess’s wedding dress was absolutely stunning, and we know exactly where you can find it!

Weeks before her wedding Jess shared a photo of her wearing white and holding a bridal dress concealed in a bag.

“Not long now until I wear the dress of my dreams and marry the man of my dreams 🤍 @janehillbridal I cannot thank you enough. Best in the business 🫶,” she captioned the pic.

Andrew and Jess’s FWAW journey

Andrew and Jess met on season 11 of Farmer Wants a Wife. In the finale, Andrew professed his love to Jess, however, the couple later revealed that they tried to leave the show early.

“Andrew knew he was going to pick me, so we went to the producers and told them we’d fallen in love and wanted to leave, but they said no,” Jess said in an interview with Confidential.

She added that producers tried to downplay the intensity of their relationship so that the ending wouldn’t be spoiled for viewers.

“They would make sure the other girls won challenges. Whenever I was with Andrew, they only let me talk about why I wouldn’t move to the farm straight away.”

“We had a solid love story and they have spun it the other way,” Andrew added.

Kylie Jenner cries over hurtful comments she ‘f-ked up’ her face with ‘so much surgery and filler’

Kylie Jenner is keeping up with the haters and getting real about the impact of their words. In the latest episode of “The Kardashians,” the 26-year-old makeup mogul opened up to her sister Kendall Jenner about the backlash and hurtful comments she’s faced over her appearance and plastic surgery over the years.

“It’s like a miracle that I still have confidence and I can still look in the mirror and think that I am pretty,” Kylie admitted during their candid chat. Despite her success and fame, the negative comments have taken a toll on her self-esteem.

Kylie specifically talked about her experience at Paris Fashion Week in September 2023. For the first time, she decided to go for a more natural look, wearing minimal makeup. However, this decision didn’t shield her from criticism. “I’m wearing too much makeup and it’s like, ‘You’re wearing too much makeup.’ Then I go and I don’t wear a lot of makeup, and someone catches me in a weird light,” she complained.

Reflecting on her past, Kylie pointed out, “You can look at pictures since I’m 13 — I just have these lines,” she said, pointing to her cheeks. “But I’ve had them since I was like, a child.”

In a confessional, Kylie shared that the relentless scrutiny has been exhausting. “I just hear nasty things about myself all the time,” she revealed. “After 10-plus years in the spotlight, it just gets exhausting.”

Kylie and Kendall delved deeper into the harsh treatment their family endures. “I think that’s a general thing with our family,” Kendall noted. “We’re dehumanised. They don’t think that there’s any rules with us. Whereas like, if you talked the same way you do about us about any other woman, people would come to their defence all day long. But for some reason with us, it’s like they don’t think we have any feelings.”

Despite her efforts to adopt a more natural look, Kylie confessed that the trolling continued. “I went on a journey last year dissolving half of my lip filler,” she admitted. “I hate even having this conversation over and over and over again. It feels like it’s a waste of my breath because I think, with me, it is never going to change.”

As the conversation got more emotional, Kylie began to cry. “I’ve never cried about this before, but I guess it does affect me,” she said, likening the chat to therapy. She mentioned seeing both supportive and harsh comments online, with some people defending her and others claiming she “f—ked up her face” with “so much surgery.”

Kendall quickly reassured her sister, saying, “I’m not even just saying this, you’ve never looked younger, and you’ve never looked better.” However, she acknowledged the ongoing battle against public perception, admitting, “I think it’s sadly — sadly — it’s something that we just have to like, really grow tough skin on.”

Kylie later reiterated to the cameras that she remains “strong” and “confident,” but emphasized that she’s also human and can only take so much. “I always keep it pushing,” she said. “I have to. I cannot let the comments get me down. I have s—t to do. Rise above.”

Robert Irwin is one of the youngest celebrities ever to be nominated for a Gold Logie.

While Robert’s been a well-known name for, well, pretty much all of his life, he really made his mark on the entertainment scene after stepping into Dr Chris Brown’s shoes as a host of I’m A Celebrity Australia in 2024, alongside Julia Morris.

Now, he’s been announced as a Gold Logie nominee at the 64th TV Week Logie Awards and is up against some other huge names in the industry.

Robert Irwin’s journey to becoming a Gold Logie nominee

Prior to stepping into the host role of I’m A Celebrity Australia, Robert has made appearances on a bunch of TV shows.

His first was way back in 2007 in Bindi the Jungle Girl as himself. In 2017 he appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, and that same year his family released the TV show Crikey! It’s the Irwins.

He’s also been on episodes of The Kelly Clarkson Show, RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under and Have You Been Paying Attention?

In June, Robert took home the award for On-Screen Content – Talent at Mediaweek’s Next of the Best Awards.
