Katy Perry and the AFL Grand Final may be two phrases you never thought you’d read in the same sentence but the day has come. The Teenage Dream singer – who’s recently made headlines over her, er, questionable comeback single – is taking centre stage at the 2024 AFL Grand Final.
In previous years, we’ve had iconic Australian performers such as Delta Goodrem, Wolfmother, Vance Joy and Powderfinger take the stage at the final.
On the other side of the coin, there have also been some international performers in the past, including The Killers and Ed Sheeran.
Regardless, Katy’s inclusion in the quintessentially Australian event has raised a few eyebrows since it was announced, and some vocal AFL fans have taken to X (formerly Twitter) to share their thoughts.
Some remarked that Katy’s recent comeback single Woman’s World (which failed in the charts and Rolling Stone called a “catastrophic flop”) is the reason that she’s agreed to do a gig that’s blatantly different from her normal choices.
“The AFL booking Katy Perry for the grand final after her flop single is so funny to me actually,” one person wrote.
Others have questioned why AFL bought in an international act when Australia already has so many incredible homegrown artists.
There are also the AFL fans who are worried it will be even harder to get a gig to the sporting gig than it already is. However, there are some fans who are stoked about the news.

How is it huge for the game? You think footy fans want to hear a Katy perry song at half time?

Although Katy is a good signer, this is an interesting choice for the AFL Grand Final entertainment considering the controversy with her latest Music.

And now your making it even harder for people who have supported their clubs for decades to get a seat. why , because a bunch of cashed up pricks will load up on tickets and price then out of the market. Thanks for helping the AFL ruin the game for the locals.

Typical of the AFL. Bypassing local acts and giving them a chance over someone who already had their fair share of the lime light.

Well that's modern day corporate Australia in a nutshell.
Shaft the locals and give everything to foreigners.
Bank account getting low is it ?
I have nothing against her but what a terrible pick.

We’re sure Katy’s too busy counting her millions to worry about what the haters think.
