Heath Ledger was an Australian icon who died both young and tragically. His death was bound to catch the attention of documentary makers.

The documentary, I Am Heath Ledger, is made up of home video footage and interviews with those that knew Heath Ledger.

Ben Mendelsohn, known for his role as the troubled brother in Netflix’s Bloodlines, said of the actor:

“Before Brokeback Mountain came out it would have been unthinkable to have a romantic tragedy involving two gay cowboys. This is one of the biggest heartthrobs on Earth taking on that character — that’s an artist.”

The documentary details that Ledger’s goal in life was never to be the actor, but to be the director of films. He wanted fame, but once he got it, he didn’t want to be one of ‘those guys’.

It has been almost 10 years since the eye-catching actor accidentally overdosed on prescription medication in New York, leaving behind his daughter Matilda and former partner Michelle Williams.

Heath Ledger was most well known for his role in films like The Dark Knight, Candy, 10 Things I Hate About You and Brokeback Mountain.

I Am Heath Ledger will first show at the Tribeca Film Festival on April 23rd, before airing in cinemas on May 3rd.
