Cinephiles, look alive, because we have some news that will likely interest you. A new adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis‘ book American Psycho is in the works. While the film is not a classic remake of the 2000 American Psycho film, it will revisit its source material and interpret it anew.

What was the premise of the original American Psycho film?

The 2000 film starred Christian Bale, Justin Theroux and Josh Lucas, and the synopsis reads as follows:
“A wealthy New York City investment banking executive, Patrick Bateman, hides his alternate psychopathic ego from his co-workers and friends as he delves deeper into his violent, hedonistic fantasies.”

Who is directing and producing the new American Psycho film?
Per reporting from Variety, director Luca Guadagnino is (Challengers, Call Me By Your Name) in the final stages of negotiating the project, which is set to feature a script by Scott Z. Burns.
Also attached to the Lionsgate film will be executive producer Sam Pressman.
Who will star in the American Psycho remake?
We don’t currently have any insight into casting, release date or how this film will differ from the 2000 American Psycho, which was directed by Mary Harron and starred Christian Bale.

For now, we simply know the film will be a fresh adaptation of the original novel.
On the American Psycho ‘remake’, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson said (per Variety), “We are thrilled to add another elite filmmaker to our upcoming slate. Luca is a brilliant artist and the perfect visionary to create a whole new interpretation of this potent and classic IP.”
Looks like we’ll be waiting a while yet for the remake of American Psycho, so it may be worth revisiting the original in the meantime.
