Woody Harrelson leads a team of Basketballers headed to the Special Olympics in the heartwarming film, Champions

Everyone loves a good inspirational sports movie, and Woody Harrelson’s (True Detective) heartwarming Champions delivers just that.

The film’s trailer, released on February 3, tells the story of a temperamental former minor-league basketball coach — Marcus Aldridge (Harrelson) — who, after a series of missteps, is ordered by the court to manage a team of players with intellectual disabilities.

The aim is to whip the team into shape to get them to the Special Olympics, and while he thinks it’s a way back to his old life, he soon realises that despite his doubts, this team can go further than they ever imagined.

What can we expect from Champions?

Backed by Tubthumping (I Get Knocked Down), there’s even some dirty humour delivered by the films breakout stars, including Marcus telling his new team: “We’re going to do some simple ball handling exercise.”

“My girlfriend loves this,” Matthew Von Der Ahe’s Craig quips. LOL!

From the get-go, Marcus believes it’s “impossible to coach these guys”, with Cheech Marin’s Julio saying that he doesn’t have to turn them “into the [LA] Lakers, you just have to turn them into a team.”

We also meet the group’s only female player Consentino (Madison Tevlin), who asks: “Where did we even get this guy?” and honestly, it’s amazing!

Who is in the cast of Champions?

Alongside Harrelson, the film also features It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia‘s Kaitlin Olson as his love interest, Ghostbusters star Ernie Hudson, Matt Cook.

Playing with the aforementioned Von Der Ahe’s and Tevlin as their teammates are Joshua Felder, Kevin Iannucci, Ashton Gunning, James Day Keith, Tom Sinclair, Bradley Edens and Alex Hintz.

Champions opens in cinemas around Australia on March 9.
