First Look: Oscar winners Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan star in Disney+' American Born Chinese

Hot off the tails of their history-making Oscar wins, Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan are now starring in American Born Chinese.

The Disney+ Original is a series based on a graphic novel of the same name by Gene Luen Yang and tells the story of Jin Wang, an average teenager juggling his high school social life with his home life.

When he meets a new foreign student on the first day of the school year, even more worlds collide as Jin is unwittingly entangled in a battle of Chinese mythological gods. 

When does American Born Chinese air?

The genre-hopping action-comedy is slated to premiere on May 24 on Disney+ and is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton (Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings).

Who is in the cast of American Born Chinese?

Alongside Yeoh and Quan is an all-star International cast including Ben Wang (Chang Can Dunk), Yeo Yann Yann (Wet Season), Chin Han (Mortal Kombat), Daniel Wu (Reminiscence), former Taekwondo champion Jimmy Liu and Sydney Taylor (Just Add Magic). Stephanie Hsu (Everything Everywhere All at Once) also guest stars.

What do we know about the graphic novel?

American Born Chinese is a graphic novel that was released in 2006 by First Second Books and was a finalist for the 2006 National Book Awards in the category of Young People’s Literature.

The story explored themes around identity, stereotypes, friendship, and self-acceptance through three intertwined story threads.

According to his official bio on Macmillan, author Yang was named a National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature by the Library of Congress in 2016 and advocates for the importance of reading, especially reading diversely.
