Remember Belle Gibson, the wellness influencer who used a fake cancer diagnosis to build an empire? Well, her truly baffling story is being used as the basis for upcoming Netflix limited series Apple Cider Vinegar.
For the uninitiated, Belle claimed to defy all odds by triumphing over terminal brain cancer using nothing but the power of healthy eating and wellness remedies.
Apple Cider Vinegar takes inspiration from the incredible true story of Gibson — here’s everything we know.
Is Apple Cider Vinegar about Belle Gibson?
Apple Cider Vinegar follows two young women, Bella and Milla, during the advent of social media. They set out to cure their life-threatening illnesses through health and wellness while motivating their growing online communities along the way. Except none of it’s true.
“Samantha Strauss has created a series that is searing in its comment but entertaining at its very core. It’s complex, it’s got bounce and it’s got bite, and we love it,” executive producers Liz Watts and Louise Gough said.
Samantha is an award-winning Australian writer (Nine Perfect Strangers) who is scripting the show with Anya Beyersdorf and Angela Betzien.
Who is in the cast?
On December 14, Netflix unveiled the all-star cast which includes TV Week Gold Logie nominee Mark Coles Smith, The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart‘s Alycia Debnam-Carey and The Bold Type star Aisha Dee.
Joining them are Kaitlyn Dever (Dopesick, Unbelievable), Tilda Cobham-Hervey (The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart) and Ashley Zukerman (Succession).
When will Apple Cider Vinegar be released?
According to Screenhub, Apple Cider Vinegar began filming on location in Melbourne in late 2023. It is expected that filming has already wrapped considering Kaitlyn would likely be needed in Canada for the second season of The Last of Us.
