This July is on of the biggest months for movies we have had yet. This month gives us a mix of massive blockbusters as well as some smaller films that have had great critical reception.
Spider-Man: Homecoming – 6 July
Following on from the events of Captain America: Civil War, we get our first stand alone Spidey movie in the MCU. With the new web-slinger, Tom Holland, we get to see Peter Parker in his natural habit of high school while being a wise-cracking friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man.
Along side Tom Holland, Spider-Man: Homecoming has a massive supporting cast including Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Michael Keaton as Vulture, Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan, Tony Revolori as Flash Thompson, Donald Glover as Aaron Davis and Hannibal Buress as Coach Wilson.
It Comes at Night – 6 July
If superheroes in red and blue tights aren’t your kind of movies, then maybe this one is for you. It Comes at Night is a horror/mystery featuring Aussie actor, Joel Edgerton. Coming from A24, the company that had a hand in bringing us films like Moonlight, The Lobster, Swiss Army Man, Green Room and 20th Century Woman in 2016 alone, It Comes at Night appears to be bringing brought to us in good hands.
After it’s US release, It Comes at Night has collected an 87% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Baby Driver – 13 July
Currently sitting with a 100% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, Baby Driver is the newest film from Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World director, Edgar Wright. Baby Driver however takes a bit of a step back from the comedy genre and dives deep into the action/crime genre.
The film featuring lead actor Ansel Elgort as Baby, a get away driver who listens to music to drown out the ringing from a previous ear injury. Baby Driver also features a supporting cast of MCU’s Punisher, Jon Bernthal, Mad Men‘s Jon Hamm, Cinderella herself, Lily James, House of Cards‘ juggernaut, Kevin Spacey, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Back to the Future‘s Michael ‘Flea’ Balzary and all round talent, Jamie Foxx.
Dunkirk – 20 July
One of the most anticipated films for 2017, Christopher Nolan‘s Dunkirk is a World War II film about the battle on the beaches and harbour of Dunkirk in France.
Dunkirk features an all star cast including Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Kenneth Branagh, Mark Rylance and Harry Styles (yes, he is acting now).
War for the Planet of the Apes – 27 July
This month brings us the third installment for one of the best franchises in recent years, Planet of the Apes. It is still unclear as to whether or not there will be a fourth installment to this prequel series (kind of), so there is a good chance we could see a wrap up on this franchise.
War for the Planet of the Apes features a returning motion capture cast of Andy Serkis as Caesar, Toby Kebbell as Koba and Judy Greer as Cornelia. The film also brings on the addition of Woody Harrelson as Colonel.
A Monster Calls – 27 July
Like many movies, A Monster Calls was released in the US in January and has taken 6 months for it to make its way to our Aussie shores. The film follows a boy as he forms a connection with a tree monster after his mother is diagnosed with a terminal illness. It currently sits with an 87% critical score on Rotten Tomatoes.
A Monster Calls features new comer Lewis MacDougall as Conor, Alien and Avatar‘s Sigourney Weaver as Grandma, Rogue One‘s Felicity Jones as Mum, Kong: Skull Island‘s Toby Kebbell as Dad and Taken‘s Liam Neeson as The Monster.
