An Empire Magazine preview, leaked on Reddit may have just revealed Jon Snow’s real name and it has us excited all over again for the new season of Game of Thrones.

If you hate spoilers, especially Game of Thrones spoilers we highly encourage you exit this page. You see, we’re a little bit too excited about Jon Snow’s real name not to go and reveal it.

The preview shows a snippet from an upcoming edition which reads: “Bran’s psychic time-travelling ‘green sight’ revealed the true nature of Jon’s birth heritage and his real name: Jaehaerys Targaryen.”

Whilst it’s unconfirmed at this stage, it’s pretty solid evidence that one of the most popular Game of Thrones fan theories is true.

That theory being R+L=J. R being Rhaegar Targaryen, L being Lyanna Stark and J being Jon Snow, their offspring.

The show already revealed that Jon Snow was not the bastard son of Ned Stark at the end of season 6. But the name leak provides some evidence that his father was indeed Rhaegar, the older brother to Daenerys Targaryen. This would make her Jon Snow’s aunt (which seems a little weird – but hey the whole show is all a little strange like that sometimes).

The leak is a big deal. Not only does it confirm the most popular Game of Thrones fan theory, it also offers a glimpse at the wider picture – the end of the show. You see, if Jon Snow is a Targaryen/Stark then his heritage is fire and ice. And, those of you familiar with Game of Thrones all know that the series is called A Song of Fire and  Ice.

Does this mean the show has been about Jon Snow the whole time?

Whatever you believe, the leak raises a whole lot of new theories and questions about how this series might end. And with just two (shortened) seasons left, things are sure starting to get to the pointy end.
