For Triple J listeners, music lovers and Aussie patriots alike, The Hottest 100 usually means hanging out with friends on Australia Day, having drinks and a barbecue while listening to the most popular music from the last year.

With this year’s countdown set to be the biggest (and most Australian) yet, it’s sure to be filled with bangers. However, if current popular tunes are just not your jam then you’re in luck. This Saturday, Double J are taking us back to 1996, counting down The Hottest 100 from 20 years ago.

Powderfinger’s “Pick You Up” placed 6th in the 1996 Triple J’s Hottest 100. Source.

I had only just been born at the time of the 1996 countdown, yet it’s interesting to see how many timeless hits that I love today made the list. There’s artists such as Metallica, AC/DC, Spiderbait, The Foo Fighters, and Powderfinger, who appeared three times. Australian music has come a long way in 20 years. In the 1996 countdown there were 29 Australian Artists. This year is set to have 66 Aussie acts.

A personal favourite is 2Pac’s California Love which came in at number 33 in 1996’s Hottest 100.

There’s also more than a couple of laughable tracks which somehow found their way onto the list, none more so than the Mission Impossible theme song which came in at number 68!

So if you’re after some nostalgic vibes to soundtrack your long weekend, tune into Double J from 12pm, Saturday 28 January.
