Finally, after years of speculation and hopeful campaigning by Glover fans, Donald Glover, AKA Childish Gambino, will be appearing in the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming film. The announcement is extremely exciting due to the fact that for almost 6 years, there has been a constant push for #Donald4Spiderman. It became a rather serious, full-blown campaign, which he explained in his 2010 stand-up special. It also found its way into his music:
“Couldn’t see me as Spider-Man, but now I’m spittin’ venom… When I wanna be a superhero I just wake up”. – Childish Gambino, Not Going Back.
It was even referenced in Community where Glover plays his widely loved geeky character Troy:
Unfortunately, back in 2010 the role went to Andrew Garfield. And it’s even more unfortunate that Glover has missed out on playing your friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man again. Yes, I too, am a bit upset that after years of hype and a final announcement we still didn’t get to see Gambino as Spider-Man. It is great news, however, that we get to see the multi-talented genius of Donald Glover on screen again.
The details surrounding Glover’s role are pretty shady at the moment and there are a range of theories beginning to circulate. One of which suggests that he will play Miles Morales. Glover did in fact voice the mixed race Spider-Man in Disney XD’s animated series Ultimate Spider-Man in 2012.
However, this theory was quickly picked apart online with Glover most likely being too old to play the teenage character, especially when Peter Parker will be played by 20 year old, Tom Holland. Donald will also join Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Marisa Tomei as Aunt May and Micheal Keaton as The Vulture. The rest of the cast, rolls, and the plot are being kept behind some rather tightly closed doors, but this reboot by director Jon Watts is expected to take Spidey back to his High School days.
