Sequels, reboots, spin-offs and retelling’s – it’s all cinema is these days. Of course, we’re perfectly okay with it, as long as it’s made well. So it goes without saying that making a sequel to one of the most significant movies of any 90’s kids childhood is a BIG risk.

Looking at the trailer for Jumanji 2: Welcome to the Jungle, we’re not quite sure just yet if the creators will pull this one off. I mean, there is plenty to get excited about – but there are also plenty of things we’re feeling a little critical of.

Firstly, there is the fact that instead of a board game coming to life, the main characters get sucked into a video game. I mean, is it really Jumanji if it’s a video game and not a board game?

Secondly, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black and Karen Gillan are playing teenagers in this film. In the trailer we see Jack Black (who is really a teenage girl) letting out a hilarious girlish scream before falling into water – so I mean sure, the situation may have some comedic implications but we don’t really get to see how well it works in the film.

Despite this, it looks like Jumanji 2: Welcome to the Jungle will be a pretty entertaining summer flick. There’s plenty jibes in the trailer, including one by Karen Gillan’s character who comments, “why I am wearing half a shirt and short shorts in the jungle?” Which relates to how females are portrayed in most video games (think Tomb Raider).

If the humour is as good as it is in the trailer, it looks like we’re in for plenty of laughs in this one. That is, of course if you can get around the differences between this film and the original, and the fact there is no Robin Williams.

Jumanji 2 will be released in Australia in December.
