xXx: Return of Xander Cage: Ridiculously Good or Bad?

3 minutes to read

There are two types of people in this world: those who like Vin Diesel films, and those who do not. Much as there are people who like McDonalds and people who don’t like McDonalds.  In regards to xXx: The Return of Xander Cage, you’d better like eating a whole bunch of McNuggets.

Before I saw this film, the general consensus from people I spoke to was that (based on the trailer) Xander Cage would be a ridiculous dumpster fire, but whole cast and crew embraced the ridiculousness to such extreme levels it actually worked. They truly knew what this film was and doubled down so much so I’m a little bit in awe. Credit is due to director D.J Carusso, who threw every idea considered to far for a fast and a furious movie right into this film.

Considering what happened in 2016 with Donald Trump, Brexit, and Macca’s hash browns going up to $2.50,  a film so detached from reality is warmly welcomed. Vin Diesel does what Vin Disel does: I wouldn’t call it acting but it’s certainly entertaining enough to earn himself a decent paycheck. Like in all his films, he provides a charismatic – if one dimensional – performance that helps keep things moving.

Supporting Vin Diesel is a combo of actors that made the film fun (which is all you can really expect from this type of film). Some notable cameos also give the Xander Cage a bit of oomph. Australia’s Ruby Rose doesn’t quite nail her role but it was a fine effort nonetheless. A notable aspect of the film was its diverse casting, with both male and female characters breaking stereotypes. Toni Collette also stars, portraying an antagonist quite adequately – a notable feat considering the lack of digestible villains in action films lately.

Some people might question why bring back a movie franchise like Xander Cage, when really it didn’t seem like many people were pining for it. Perhaps it’s because sometimes the world just needs some ridiculous, over-the-top fun.
