New to Australian Netflix this June

5 minutes to read

It’s June people, it’s here: WINTER is here! There’s water falling from the sky, the temperature has dropped by a whole four degrees and people are digging out ridiculously oversized jumpers for what is really just mild weather.

Seriously people, it’s only like 18 degrees. source

You know what else winter means? Accepting you should probably wait till it’s warmer to try to get your life together and instead planning a long binge session. Bears have hibernation, young adults have Netflix.

Well settle in kids, while there aren’t a lot of standout shows this months, June is offering up some super sweet movies, full of classic comedies and a few more interesting ones, that will help you ward off the Aussie winter. Let’s just hope your power doesn’t go out…

  1. Hard Candy (June 1st)

Before Ellen Page was giving birth to her and Michael Cera’s orange tic tac loving baby, she was teaching a serious lesson. This dark film follows Hayley Stark (Ellen Page), a young teenage girl, who meets up with an older man Jeff (Patrick Wilson), who she met online. Once he takes her back to his house, Hayley turns the tables, capturing Jeff and interrogating him under the suspicion that he’s a sex offender and pedophile. This movie is graphic and deep, exploring very mature themes of victim blaming and rape culture. It’s definitely not the usual charater Ellen Page plays but Hard Candy is amazing nonetheless.

2. Liar Liar (June 22nd)

If you didn’t run around with your friends yelling “THE CLAW”, and exclaiming “the pen is BLUE!” Then what kind of childhood did you have? This classic comedy flick is one of Jim Carrey’s best. Teaching us all the importance of honesty (and physical comedy) Liar Liar will have you reliving the warmer days of the past.

3. The Man From U.N.C.L.E (June 16th)

This one is probably my favourite spy movie in recent years. The music, the fashion, the action, the ridiculously handsome men… it’s all good. Rebooting the old series by the same name, The Man From U.N.C.L.E is set during the height of the cold war. In order to take down a mysterious organisation, CIA agent Napoleon Solo (Henry Cavill) and KGB operative Illya Kuryakin (Armie Hammer) must team up with the gorgeous Gaby Teller (Alicia Vikander) to execute a joint mission and, basically, kick ass. The on screen chemistry between Cavill and Hammer is incredibly funny and I still have my fingers crossed for a sequel.

4. My Best Friend’s Wedding (June 15th)

What winter binge list would be complete without a good old sappy chick flick? Taking us back to that golden age known as the late 90s, Julia Roberts tries to escape from the friendzone before sad butthurt “gentlemen” even made it a thing. Lusting after her best friend (who is getting married IMMINENTLY), Roberts acts, well, kind of like a douchebag, disregarding everyone else’s feelings and causing drama left right and centre. But, damnit, she’s a relatable douchebag: she’s OUR douchebag!
