Being a film that is very much about time, it is ironic then that Alice Through the Looking Glass, the sequel to Tim Burton’s 2010 billion dollar hit Alice in Wonderland, will have you constantly checking your watch. Directed this time around by James Bobin (The Muppets), Alice Through the Looking Glass  suffers from similar issues as its predecessor and is not up to the standard set by Disney‘s last release The Jungle Book, which I liked very much.

Alice Through The Looking Glass once again stars Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter and Mia Wasikowska as Alice and sees Alice return to Wonderland, where she must travel back in time to save Mad Hatter and his family, through a series of convoluted plot points. Once again, the film suffers from an over-reliance on CGI. Alice Through The Looking Glass will almost certainly make its money back, but may confuse young audiences with its ridiculous time-travel story arch.

Another issue with the film is its incoherent narrative and inconsistent characters. For example, there is one scene in the film where Alice is being treated in an institution by a sinister doctor, played by Andrew Scott (Sherlock, Spectre), who is never referred to again in the film. It almost felt like the filmmakers decided to shoehorn in an actor from a popular series, in order to gain a larger audience (who would of thought!). This scene, however, was the most interesting part of the film, which is why it was so disappointing that the idea of Alice’s mental health was not explored any further. Instead, the film decides to hammer down messages about family, friendship and forgiveness without any subtlety.

So, if you’re planning to see a well-made, engaging family-friendly film, skip this and go see The Jungle Book or Zootopia instead.

Alice Through the Looking Glass is released nationwide on May 26
