We all know the world is in a bit of a pickle at the moment. What with war, poverty, climate change and capitalism running rife. You can’t do everything, but everyone can do something to make a change in the world for the better. Here are a few songs to ignite the spark in you and hopefully inspire you to make a difference in the word.

One Love – Bob Marley

When you hear the laid back reggae beat you can’t help but kick back and daydream about love and peace. After all, that’s what Marley was all about. The message is about living as one and realising that we’re the same, we love the same and that this should be embraced. If we don’t embrace each other, we can’t live in peace.

Where is the love? – Black Eyed Peas

Every time I listen to this song I feel so empowered. It has such a different feel to every other song on this list, but being able to spit the words out with such force makes it feel like you’re really delivering the message of the song: even if you’re just pumping it alone in your car.

We’re all in this together – Ben Lee

This song is not as well known as most of the others, but it’s just as beautiful. This song used to be my alarm tone and it puts you in such a calm mood to start your day. It’s basically about knowing that everyone is equal and everyone is going through the same shit as you, so why not work together instead of against one another?

Waiting on the world to change – John Mayer

This song brings up a lot of great messages, about the media, war, etc. but one thing that always bugged me was that Mayer sings about “waiting” for the world to change. It should speak more about being able to change the world here and now and not waiting until the right people are in power. Because who knows if that will ever happen. So rather than inspiring me to change the world, this song inspires me to change peoples’ mindsets about their ability to change the world.

Somewhere over the rainbow – Israel Kamakawiwo’ole

My heart warms every time this song begins to play. An old classic turned into a modern day anthem for love and the hope for a brighter world. This song always makes me think of my friends in Kiribati and reignites the spark in me that wants to save them and the world. You can’t help but smile and sway when you hear it.

Awake my soul – Mumford and Sons

Although not specifically about changing the world, this song makes me want to change myself. It inspires me to wake up and see the beauty and potential in every day and, by changing myself, hopefully in turn change the world around me. It makes me want to unlock and unleash my spirit and realise, I can actually do so much more than I think.

From little things big things grow – Paul Kelly

A song about a true story of national change which started with one man. National change in our own country. A song about a man so brave and determined to set things right. This song makes me smile and cry all at once. I cry because it’s ridiculous that there should even be a song about the first Australian’s fighting to get their land back. But I smile because their fight is so inspiring and makes me feel that the right thing is always worth fighting for, no matter how long it takes. It’s a classic Aussie song and a true Australian underdog story. It’s our history and our future.
